Introduction

Enabling Green Video Streaming over Internet of Things

The GREEN-IoM project presents a novel research vision for green video streaming over Internet of Multimedia (IoM), which is an enhancement to the Internet of Things (IoT). Its prime objective is to enable video streaming as part of the realization of IoT with reduced overall ecological footprint, in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, while maintaining video fidelity as tradeoff with the energy and carbon footprints. The solution consists of a new novel architecture for IoM and a framework that comprises of new video encoding technique and communication protocols for green communication. The proposed IoM architecture is hierarchical in which the new cognitive radio based standard IEEE 802.22 for wireless regional area network (WRAN) is optionally employed at the higher tier, while IEEE 802.11 with new power saving functions is exploited at the lower tier to achieve energy efficient and high data rate links for multimedia devices. In the new video encoding architecture, compressive sensing is exploited along with the H.264/AVC to achieve low complexity with low video rate tailored for the low power and low cost video cameras, which are also characterized as low processing and storage devices. Second, the video transmission is dealt efficiently that is optimized according to the availability of energy sources and their ecological effects, thus aiming to support green video streaming over IoT. The project also investigates the potential of IEEE 802.11 for low power devices and proposes new power saving functions analogous to the reduced function devices with star/mesh topology in order to support high data rate requirements for multimedia devices with the energy consumption comparable to the ZigBee devices. Moreover, the project incorporates hybrid energy sources in which the devices are not only powered through the batteries but also some alternate energy sources, particularly solar cell. This will aim towards the next step of realizing IoT in the real-world applications involving multimedia devices extensively with the additional objective of green communication.
