KICS UET’s Annual Conference ICOSST 2016 Successfully Wraps Up - Chairman PITB The Chief Guest of the Closing Ceremony
Al-Khawarazmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS) University of Engineering and Technology Lahore has organized its annual conference ‘ICOSST 2016’ held from 15th to 17th December 2016 at UET Lahore. The opening ceremony of the conference was held on 16th December 2016, whereas the closing ceremony of the conference was held at University’s main auditorium hall on 17th December 2016, where Dr. Omer Saif, Chairman PITB was the chief guest. Other distinguished guests such as Dr. Shafay Shamail, IEEE Lahore Section’s Chairman and the invited speakers of the conference who came from across the globe to attend the event.
This year’s ICOSST 2016’s was the 10th edition of the annual conference and its theme was Smart Cities. The event wrapped up its decade’s activities successfully. It was a three-day conference held at KICS UET Lahore for the researchers and practitioners from across the world to share their ideas and experiences related to the state-of-the-art and the future of open-source software. IEEE ICOSST is a successful scientific venue where participants share ideas, strategies, and policies for tackling the development, research and adaptation challenges related to open-source tools and development environments. Nearly 200 research papers from 28 countries were submitted in conference this year and peer reviewed by 240 reviewers from the international technical program committee from 32 countries including USA, Australia, Japan, China, Canada, India, Romania, Malaysia, UK and to name a few.
The honorable chief guest, Mr. Omer Saif, first of all appreciated the efforts of KICS UET to make this event happen successfully, then went on sharing his success story by letting the audience know how he studied at Cambridge university to do his PhD? He then revealed the importance of the research papers. Mr. Omer said that the bad system of the country needs to be changed in order to bring change in the country. He pointed out how badly every department of the government was working? He said this generation could bring about change in the country. He then mentioned the bitter reality of being so behind in the world mentioning Pakistan does not have even a single university among top 700 universities of the world. Mr. Omer also appreciated UET’s efforts to produce talents and doing technological advancement works.
Vice Chancellor UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid in his speech talked about the promotion and development of quality education. He focused on the technology’s importance in society. Vice Chancellor then talked about opeb source technology and its values in today’s world. He talked about as to how cities can be converted into smart cities.
Dr. Waqar Mahmood, KICS Director presented a brief introduction of ICOSST 2016 and KICS. Additionally he also revealed the history of ICOSST and the significance of open source especially for countries like Pakistan.
Other speakers such as Dr. Shafay Shamail and Dr. Andrew from the University of South Wales (UK) also shared their views.
The ceremony concluded with shield distributions to the honorable chief guest presented by Vice Chancellor and Director KICS. The chief guest presented the shields to the organizers of the event.
