Syed Raza Ali Gillani, HED Minister of Punjab Inaugurates ICOSST 2016’s Opening Ceremony in UET Lahore
Al-Khawarazmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS) University of Engineering and Technology Lahore is organizing its annual conference ‘ICOSST 2016’ being held from 15th to 17th December 2016 at UET Lahore. The opening ceremony of the conference was held on 16th December 2016 at University’s main auditorium hall, where the chief guest Mr. Syed Raza Ali Gillani, the honorable minister HED Govt. of Punjab, inaugurated the ceremony along with other distinguished guests such as Mr. Tariq Sultan, Member (Finance) PTA and Dr. Arshad Ali, Executive Director HEC Pakistan.
This year’s ICOSST 2016’s is the 10th edition of the annual conference and its theme is Smart Cities. It is a three-day conference being held from 15th to 17th December 2016 at KICS UET Lahore for the researchers and practitioners from across the world to share their ideas and experiences related to the state-of-the-art and the future of open-source software. IEEE ICOSST is a successful scientific venue where participants share ideas, strategies, and policies for tackling the development, research and adaptation challenges related to open-source tools and development environments. Nearly 200 research papers from 28 countries have been submitted in conference this year and peer reviewed by 240 reviewers from the international technical program committee from 32 countries including USA, Australia, Japan, China, Canada, India, Romania, Malaysia, UK and to name a few.
The honorable minister, Mr. Syed Raza Ali Gillani said that software is the need of the hour and is much important in today’s life. He insisted on the development of software technology. Additionally he revealed about the importance of open source technology. Gillani also appreciated the researchers came all the way from abroad to attend this conference. He liked the efforts being consumed by KICS UET for making collaborations in IT. Syed Raza said that government of Punjab and higher education department will always support research activities in UET.
Mr. Tariq Sultan, Member (Finance) PTA talked about the spectrum of 3G and 4G. He excitedly told that now connectivity in rural areas was not a big problem, as now the rural areas had full connectivity. He further said now the government’s finance ministry had made planning of year 2020 when the country would be having majority of mobile bank accounts.
Vice Chancellor UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid in his speech talked about the promotion and development of quality education, which the university was delivering to its students. He also revealed university’s history and its growth over the years. Dr. Fazal said that university had good support from the government.
Dr. Waqar Mahmood, KICS Director presented a brief introduction of ICOSST 2016 and KICS. Additionally he also revealed the history of ICOSST and the significance of open source especially for countries like Pakistan.
Other speakers such as Dr. Andrew from the University of South Wales (UK) and Dr. Kamran Iqbal from USA presented their views on the conference.
The ceremony concluded with shield distributions to the honorable guests and the winners of Brianiac 2016 competition were awarded with certificates and prize money by the honorable minister.
