CLT 16 – A Conference Laced with Paper Presentations & Talks Taken Place in UET
6th International Conference on Language and Technology 2016 (CLT16) recently took place in University of Engineering and Technology Lahore on 17th and 18th November. It was conducted by CLE (Center for Language Engineering), a research lab of KICS (Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science) UET Lahore. CLT 16 is a biennial conference series organized by Society for Natural Language Processing Pakistan (SNLP) and is conducted to promote the area of research, educate the masses and to make the decision making authorities realize the importance of Language and Technology in this modern age of computers. Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC), Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) were the sponsors for this conference.
At the event, 38 papers were submitted – out of which, 12 were chosen for presentation and 4 for posters after a thorough review done by an international technical committee. These papers covered Pashto, Sindhi, Mewati and Urdu language specifically, and a number of other areas including linguistics and computational aspects of phonetics, phonology, syntax and semantics. The conference also witnessed exciting talks by Dr. Miriam Butt from Germany, Dr. Hassan Sajjad from Qatar and many other eminent national researchers of NLP presenting their recent research in syntax, prosody, pattern recognition and frontiers in machine translation.
The last of the conference concluded with a panel discussion on Building Synergies and Collaborations, where the panelists discussed possible points of mutual collaboration among the research groups. At the closing ceremony, honorable Vice Chancellor of UET, Dr. Fazal Ahamd Khlaid and Director KICS, Waqar Mahmood appreciated the research team at CLE led by Dr. Sarmad Hussain.
