  • Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore organized the IEEE 6th International Conference on Open Source Systems and Technologies (ICOSST-2012) and associated Open Source Series Workshops (OSSW-2012) with technical sponsorship from IEEE and in collaboration with Higher Education Commission, National ICT R&D Fund Islamabad, UET-ACM Student Chapter on 20-22 December, 2012.
    The main purpose of the conference was to bring together academia and software industry researchers and practitioners from across the world to share their ideas and experiences related to the state-of-the-art and the future of open-source software. KICS is conceived as an institute for applied research, covering the general area of Information Technology and Computer Science in UET, Lahore.  One of the main contributions of KICS is its open source development which targets development, deployment, modification and customization of open source tools and software. The international delegates participating in the conference were from USA, UK, Japan and Malaysia.
    Conference started in the name of Almighty Allah.  The conference also contained the Multifaceted Open Source Series Workshop (OSSW-2012).  A total of eight workshops were presented in the area of Sensor–based Application for Android Devices, Android Application Development, Getting Started with Ns2 for Developing New Protocols, How to Build Wireless Devices in Software, Near Field Communication, Integrated and Extended Open Source Machine Learning Software, Urdu Nastalique Optical Character Recognition and Protocol Implementation and Evaluation Using Omnet++. The purpose of this activity was to bring Open Source practitioners from around the world related to academia and industry on a single platform where they share their experiences and present their work lively.

    Chief Guest, Mr. Muhammad Irfan Chaudhry, Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Warid Telecom, talked about the telecom sector and highlighted the challenges which Pakistan telecom industry is facing currently. He appreciated the collaboration of academia and industry in mobile communication, open source and technology field. In the end of his address he specially appreciated the efforts of KICS-UET and congrats the Vice Chancellor, UET, and Director, KICS, on their achievements.
    Keynote, Mr. Fouad Bajwa, IPRR, Pakistan, talked about the open source software industry scope in Pakistan and shared the Information Economy Report 2012, United Nations, with the audience. He specially highlighted the presence of UET in that report and really appreciates the KICS-UET contributions in this field.
    Conference 1st day was consisted on parallel sessions on Information Systems, Networks & Security and Software Applications and Systems.  Invited speakers Dr. Abdul Waheed, CISCO, USA, Dr. Farooq Ahmad, FIT, UCP, Lahore, Dr. Sohaib Ahmad Khan, LUMS, Lahore, and Dr. Muzammil Shahbaz, University of Sheffield, UK, addressed with the audience during these sessions.
    Conference 2nd day was consisted on parallel sessions on Software and Network Systems
    and Mobile Systems and Applications.  Invited speakers Dr. Usman Javaid, Vodafone UK, Dr. Muhammad Yusof Ismaili, UTM, Malaysia, Dr. Ashiq Anjum, University of Derby, UK, Dr. Tahir Abbas, Ritsumeikan University, Japan, Dr. Fakhar Lodhi, GIFT University, Gujranwala and Dr. Mehvish Irfan Poshni, PUCIT, Lahore addressed with the audience during sessions.
    The Closing ceremony of ICOSST 2012 was held on 22nd December, 2012 at 7:00 PM in Auditorium Complex, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. The Chief Guest for the closing ceremony was Dr. Umar Saif, Chairman PITB admired the efforts and team work in successfully managing and hosting the event. He also conveyed his views about contribution by PITB in Open Source. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director of KICS apprised the audience of KICS services in Open Source for last many years. He highlighted contribution by KICS in Open Source in the domain of Enterprise solution, multi-core programming software radios, energy invoicing etc. The distinguished guest was Dr. Khaver Zia Chair, IEEE Lahore Section. He also highlighted importance of Open Source Technology. He acknowledges the practical approach of organizing ICOSST.
    The representative of international delegates, Dr Abdul Waheed from Cisco System, USA reviewed the conference performance and highlighted its achievements from international perspective. He also appreciated the successful conductance and management of technical program. The Vice-Chancellor, Lt. Gen (R) Muhammad Akram Khan presented the shields to the Chief Guest of Closing Ceremony.
